I was looking at the Abeka website and gearing up to order Greyson's stuff and needed your advice. I think we've decided to go with the cursive K5 child kit and I've added the science and social studies books as well as the bible memory flash cards. Is there anything else I need? I was given the teacher books so that definately helps. Should I order readiness skills or the bible curriculum books? Does anyone order the Bible curriculum? It is super expensive but looks worthwhile. I don't know what to order...the website's a bit confusing. Just need some help so please comment. Also, don't I need to register him or something? Thanks so much!

In our state a child needs to have an "intent to homeschool" form filled out and sent in prior to the school year starting - this is required at age 8 and on up. However, I do it regardless of age, once I start to homeschool that particular child - just being above reproach.
Also, I don't typically do a bible curriculum because we do our own devotions and scripture memory. Although, A-Beka is very good in teaching children scripture memory. Team up your own devos with what they do already on Wednesday nights and I think that is plenty, esp. at this age. Once my children hit 2nd grade we do DVD's and that includes all those "extras" that A-Beka provides.
I think starting with cursive is the best thing. This increases their fine motor skills and do really well. I've done it both ways, and much prefer starting with cursive. I would recommend the blend cards and purchasing a small clock (take batteries out) that you can teach time with. Also - go to the dollar store and get play money to teach money with. You may also want to purchase the craft/art book - the kids love that. If you have anymore questions let me know. I hope that was helpful.
hey! i wish i could offer advice, but i have NO idea..bc i dont have a child old enough to do school with =] BUT i do know that there is PLENTY of people who you can ask, mrs browning gave some great advice! You could ask janinne or jan broxton, grace potvin, or emily (of course when she gets back from her trip!) good luck i hope you find the advice you are looking for =]
I don't think you would need to order the bible curr. too b/c between church and bible time at home I would think that is plenty. The bible classes they have are good though, don't get me wrong. I did the dvd program with siah for his 1st grade year...and well I won't choose to do dvd's again until he is much much older...it was a LONG year! Every child is different though, but I would not recommend doing the dvd's until they are older. It was so hard for siah to concentrate on the tv with having his siblings around. I would definitely teach him myself next time. The stuff you are buying sounds good. And having the clock that the 1st person suggested you get is a good idea too, and the play money. Josiah needed that in 1st grade, not sure if they do that a lot in k-5 too.
Anyways, good luck with your 1st year of homeschooling! Each year you will find what you like and don't like and can build on it!
